The War on Drugs in America: Problems, Solutions, and Politics of Modern Drug Arrests from Marijuana

The war on drugs is a failing battle with millions of dollars spent each year to curb drug use amongst the U.S. population. Opioid addiction is at a startling high, and the DEA is still going full bore to try to stop the problem in our country. President Trump has plans to fight this crisis that are focusing on rehabilitation efforts. A bigger budget and better policies may help the situation, but historically the DEA has used a failing approach. Cracking down on crime has meant more people behind bars and a lack of focus on programs aimed at helping those afflicted. This article will address law enforcement and drug crimes. I am going to tell you about this situation, and discuss the politics that surround drugs and drug use, and a little bit about the history of prohibition here in the United States.

The Problem.

I have heard some people say (ie my mom) that legalizing all drugs, even cocaine and heroin, is the solution to our epidemic. While sounding quite wild, think back to prohibition era America. From 1920-1933 alcohol was outlawed in the U.S. The results were a black market saturated with dangerous moonshine liquor, illegal speakeasies and wild drinking, and many arrests in which the coppers hauled people away in locked wagons to the local jail. There are countries today that are looking at more progressive ways of dealing with illegal drug use. In Portugal all drugs were legalized 14 years ago and now hardly anyone there dies from overdoses. Can we even compare this small European country to the large and powerful United States? The answer to our problems could lay in our approach to the problem.

President Donald Trump has been one of the most criticized and insulted leaders in the history of our country. He has been called a bigot, a rapist, and a fool. While some of his decisions, such as his policies on clean energy and reproductive rights, have not come without scrutiny, what about his plan for fighting drugs? Does he have the right idea that we need to prevent drugs from coming over the borders and rehabilitate drug abusers as opposed to punishing them? I just want to bring awareness to the ways our laws affect everyday people - and I mean all of us - drug users, and those who wouldn't touch a joint with a ten-foot pole.

The Solution.

Imagine a world where people didn't die every day from drug overdoses, and people were not thrown in jail for having a small bag of marijuana. The truth is that our current judiciary system profits from fines, tickets, and court costs. Prisons today are in the business to make money and there are fewer programs directed at rehabilitation and reforming policies to help people instead of hurt them. Perhaps the Western world needs a new approach to the drug crisis. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimated that there were 64,000 fatal drug overdoses in 2016. So the question becomes: how do we curb drug abuse and what ways are needed going forward to help people instead of hurting them? We need better policies on this issue and better resolutions.

The U.S. is one of the most powerful nations in the world. We should be looking beyond the obvious to help problems that are not so simple. I'm not saying to legalize all drugs immediately - there are unforeseen consequences of this action. However, a progressive approach to help the problem needs to be discussed. Drug crimes can ruin lives, and without an experienced lawyer to help, you may be in for a world of hurt. Maybe you could try some CBD oil to help you relax, I don't know.

Conclusion.

If you have been arrested for a drug crime, it's in your best interests to seek legal counsel. Your attorney knows the ins and outs of the legal system and can help you avoid time in jail and unnecessary fines and headaches. No matter where you stand in regards to politics, we can't ignore the facts. The war on drugs has been failing for years. It's time for new policies and better strategies to solve our ongoing problems. When something is broken, we fix it. Let's stop the government from spending 8 million dollars per year on ripping marijuana plants out of the ground - hemp heals.
